2011 Recycling Recommendations
DOE
1. DOE promote recycling at its professional development workshops
2. Teacher certification programs at the local universities require recycling training. This can be achieved via a Chancellor's Regulation.
3. Principal certification programs do the same
4. Two prep periods per week for the school's "Sustainability Coordinator." Make the position "Recycling Coordinator" rather than "Sustainability Coordinator." Initiating a recycling program in a school is already a lot of work.
5. A poster about recycling be placed in every elementary school classroom
6. Paint the sidewalks where trash is left for DSNY pickup 3 colors, one for trash, one for paper and one for bottles. This way the waste stream stays separate.
7. Ask the 831 ATR's currently without work to help do recycling audits
8. Schedule regular tours for teachers of Sims and Pratt recycling plants.
DSNY
9. Have DSNY issue fines directly to principals and custodians that do not recycle. The principals and custodians have the authority and resources to make recycling happen. They should be held personally responsible for not complying. By not seeing that recycling gets done they are not doing their job and they are violating the law.
What's more is that the Bloomberg administration has broken up larger schools into smaller ones and in the process added 600 principals. These principals have smaller and thus more manageable work loads and should be responsible for coordinating staff development for recycling.
