Common building stones in NYC

NYC Parks Dept. explain where the stones come from for various statues.

Rosendale Cement - A natural cement made from limestone mined in Rosendale, NY from 1817 - 1970. It became the standard against which other cements were measured.  It was used on the Old Croton Aqueduct and the Brooklyn Bridge. (Look for the article "American Natural Cement Revival" by Michael P. Edison)

Abandoned mines in NY and PA including limestone mines in Rosendale, NY were recently re-explored.
